Canadian municipalities announced a significant combined investment of $2.4 billion in public transit infrastructure improvements this week, with the ambitious goal of enhancing service reliability and reducing daily commute times across major urban centres from coast to coast.
The city of Toronto will receive $890 million specifically allocated for subway system expansion and the modernization of its aging bus fleet. This substantial funding will extend Line 2 service deeper into Scarborough and add approximately 150 new electric buses to the TTC fleet by the year 2027.
Vancouver’s TransLink transit authority successfully secured $620 million for critical SkyTrain upgrades and new rapid bus lines. The highly anticipated Broadway Subway extension, expected to officially open in late 2027, will significantly cut travel times between downtown Vancouver and Burnaby by approximately 15 minutes.
“These major investments will fundamentally transform how Canadians move through our cities,” declared Infrastructure Minister Sean Fraser at the announcement. “Better public transit means reduced traffic congestion, cleaner air quality, and more valuable time for Canadian families.”
