Toronto’s iconic Yonge Street has earned a prestigious spot on The Telegraph’s “20 Streets You Must Walk in Your Lifetime” list, making it the only Canadian street to receive this global recognition. The list was curated by destination expert Chris Moss, who praised Yonge Street’s remarkable blend of culture, commerce, and character.
“The very best streets are a combination of open-air museums, with a handy supply of bars or cafés, restaurants or rest areas to make the experience of walking joyous and memorable,” Moss wrote in his feature published this month.
A Street Like No Other
Running north for more than 80 kilometres, Yonge Street is the main artery of Canada’s largest city. Moss highlighted its impressive roster of shops, entertainment venues, and cultural landmarks, including Sankofa Square, the Hockey Hall of Fame, and numerous civic buildings that dot the corridor.
According to the Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area, Yonge Street and nearby Dundas Street were originally built as military supply routes but quickly evolved into the epicentre of Toronto’s urban life.
Must-Visit Stops Along Yonge
For visitors looking to explore, the Eaton Centre at 220 Yonge Street stands as downtown Toronto’s premier shopping destination. Food lovers can visit the newly opened Eataly, the global Italian marketplace that launched inside the Eaton Centre in late 2025, or dine at Lucie, a Michelin-recommended French restaurant at 100 Yonge Street.
Sports fans can stop by the Hockey Hall of Fame at 30 Yonge Street, while music enthusiasts can catch a performance at The Concert Hall at 888 Yonge Street.
World-Class Company
Yonge Street joins an elite global list that includes Paris’s Champs-Élysées, New York’s Broadway, Bangkok’s Khao San Road, and Berlin’s Unter den Linden. Other streets on the list span destinations from Kyoto’s Philosopher’s Path to Sydney’s George Street and Buenos Aires’s Avenida de Mayo.

Whether you’re a lifelong Torontonian or a first-time visitor, this international recognition serves as a reminder that one of the world’s best walking experiences is right in the heart of Canada’s biggest city.
