Canada Post has received federal approval to end door-to-door mail delivery across Canada. The Crown corporation announced it will convert remaining home delivery addresses to community mailboxes as part of a major restructuring plan.
The government stated these changes are necessary to prevent Canada Post from becoming a burden on taxpayers. The plan includes closing rural post offices, adjusting delivery standards, and increasing stamp rates more frequently.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) strongly opposes the move, calling it an attempt to derail negotiations. The union, representing 55,000 workers, says it will fight against cuts to postal services. Canada Post has not disclosed how many workers could face layoffs.
These changes follow a commission report that found Canada Post to be financially troubled. The corporation says it remains committed to treating employees with respect throughout the transition process.
