How Ancient Fur Skis Are Made in Altay

The “Ancient Fur Ski-Making Technique” of Altay City is recognized as a representative intangible cultural heritage of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. With support from the Altay City Cultural Center, Sranbek Shaheshi, a designated inheritor of this heritage, has established a dedicated training and exhibition base in Nuogait Village, Laste Township, Altay City. Covering approximately 50 square meters, the base combines production, demonstration, and sales under one roof. It serves participants of traditional winter skiing competitions as well as tourists, offering hands-on experiences that highlight the unique fur ski-making craft. By integrating tourism with cultural heritage, the initiative promotes the sale of “horsehide skis” while allowing more people to learn about and appreciate this ancient craft.
