Shanxi’s Yuncheng Kicks Off 36th Guan Gong Cultural Tourism Festival

Yuncheng, Shanxi — Sept. 23, 2025 — The city of Yuncheng in northern China has launched the 36th Guan Gong Cultural Tourism Festival, a three-day event celebrating the legacy of Guan Gong, the legendary general revered in Chinese history as a symbol of loyalty, courage, and righteousness.

Running from September 23 to 25, the festival features art and photography exhibitions, academic forums, cultural performances, a regional food fair, and investment promotion events aimed at linking culture with commerce. Highlights include the international release of the documentary Why Guan Gong, the opening of a new cultural exhibition center at the Guan Di Temple, and the debut of songs dedicated to Guan Gong’s legacy.

Often referred to as the “God of War,” Guan Gong has been celebrated in Chinese culture for more than 1,800 years. His story is not only a part of China’s national heritage but also a source of identity and solidarity for Chinese communities overseas.

“Guan Gong culture is one of the most influential spiritual symbols in Chinese civilization,” said Chen Lin, president of SOLO Magazine in Canada. “Coming to his hometown offers a deeper understanding of his legacy and the central place he holds in people’s hearts.”

Journalist He Yiling from Spain’s European Overseas Chinese Daily noted that Guan Gong’s values resonate strongly with diaspora communities. “The principles of loyalty, righteousness, benevolence, and courage guide how many overseas Chinese live and do business,” she said. “Visiting his birthplace feels like reconnecting with cultural roots.”

Local officials say the festival is also part of Yuncheng’s effort to position itself as a cultural and tourism hub, drawing attention to the city’s broader heritage that includes Yellow River traditions, ancestral culture, and folk practices.

For the millions of overseas Chinese who honor Guan Gong in temples and associations around the world, Yuncheng’s festival serves as both a cultural homecoming and a reminder of shared identity.
