Overseas Chinese Media Discover the “Five Colours of Jilin” – A Tapestry of Heritage, Innovation, and Nature

Changchun, Jilin – Sept. 15 – From Sept. 9 to 15, more than 20 representatives of overseas Chinese media from over a dozen countries and regions embarked on a weeklong journey across Changchun, Jilin City, and Changbai Mountain. Organized by the Jilin Provincial Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, the “Five-Coloured Jilin, Voices Across the Seas” media tour showcased the province’s rich cultural identity, ecological beauty, and innovative drive.

Golden Harvest

At September Harvest Family Farm in Yongji County, reporters witnessed how low-altitude drones and satellite remote sensing are transforming agriculture. The farm demonstrated real-time monitoring of crop growth, soil conditions, and pest control, all powered by AI and Internet of Things technology.

“On China’s black soil heartland, AI has already reshaped traditional agriculture,” noted Huang Jinhong, president and editor-in-chief of Holland Online. “These innovations not only boost yields but also offer global solutions for food security.”

Silver Winters

In Jilin City, located along the world’s “golden snow belt,” the delegation explored a region where ice and snow define both landscape and industry. With international ski resorts, the frost-covered Songhua River, and the famed rime ice spectacles, Jilin is developing a winter economy from its cold resources.

The group also attended the release of the Jilin Ice and Snow Tourism Initiative for World Tourism Cities, focusing on technology, equipment, and global cooperation. At Beishan Four-Season Ski Resort, built from former air-defense facilities, delegates skied indoors at -6°C, while scientists at a “rime laboratory” recreated the natural wonder with precision.

“This is a perfect example of science enhancing nature,” said Chen , president of Canada SOLO Media, as he touched the man-made ice crystals.

Red Heritage

The tour included the Jilin Provincial Museum of Modern History, where exhibits highlight the province’s pivotal role in modern China — from the anti-Japanese resistance to the founding of New China’s auto, film, and aviation industries. Covering 4,400 square metres, the exhibition displays over 1,000 artifacts, 1,200 photos, and 70 data charts.

“Each visit brings new insights, but this time gave me a deeper perspective,” said Qi Jijie, deputy editor-in-chief of Macau Monthly. “It’s a reminder to honour history and carry forward the spirit of resistance.”

Blue Innovation

In Changchun, the delegation toured FAW Jiefang’s J7 intelligent truck plant, where robotic arms assembled vehicles with seamless precision. At CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., they learned that assembling a bullet train involves 364 processes yet takes just 12 days.

“This combination of efficiency and precision is rare worldwide,” said Cui Zhichen, editor-in-chief of New Zealand China News.

With leading universities, research institutes, and manufacturing giants, Jilin is driving transformation in advanced materials, biotech, and transportation. At the Northeast Innovation Centre, new technologies — from boron-based radiation shielding to medical applications — showcased the region’s ambition to turn science into industry.

Green Foundations

The journey concluded at Changbai Mountain, known as the “gene bank of species” in Northeast Asia. The group marveled at Changbai Waterfall, fed by Heaven Lake at 2,200 metres above sea level. With over 2,500 species of wild plants and 360 species of animals, the mountain is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a crucial ecological shield for the region.

“Changbai Mountain is more than a natural wonder — it is a life source for Northeast China,” said Cui. “It nourishes the black soil, sustains communities, and underpins regional agriculture and industry.”

A Living Mosaic

From golden harvest fields to silver winter landscapes, red heritage, blue innovation, and green ecosystems, the “Five Colours of Jilin” came alive for the overseas Chinese media representatives. Through their reporting, these stories will now travel far beyond the province — echoing across oceans and cultures.
